As a supplier of Mahle filters, it is our responsibility to let those of you that purchase them aware of the correct methods of installation, and any potential issues that may arise from incorrect installation.
One such filter that has caused some issues recently is the Mahle OX388D. This filter is designed to fit 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines, primarily diesel engines from the VW group. Problems that arise from incorrect installation can include the oil filter housing leaking in the engine. Not good! This can occur if excessive torque is applied to the housing cover.
The instructions below are to show you that with the correct tools and taking the time to make sure everything is fitted correctly, then you will have nothing to fear!
Figure 1: The oil filter insert in question, OX 388D, with the accompanying oil filter module.
Figure 2: This is the important bit – In this image, you can see the torque specification on the housing cover, 25Nm. After the oil filter insert is changed, the cover is screwed back onto the housing; the permissable torque is 25Nm (+5Nm)
Figure 3: Here you can see an undamaged thread on the oil filter housing, if it has been torqued correctly during installation, then this is what yours should look like!
Figure 4: In this image, you can see the damaged thread, which is due to it being forced on and over tightened. The damaged thread, and warped cover can result in leakage from the housing cover and loss of engine oil.
IMPORTANT! When changing the filter, always use a torque spanner to ensure compliance with the manufacturers specifications – a standard spanner will not do! Also, to prevent damage, we recommend coating the new gaskets with clean engine oil before fitting.
